Best Vape Pens

We take a look at the best vape pens & best vaporizer pens on the market in 2022.

Table Of Contents

Vape pens can also go by any other names; vapor pens, vaporizer pens, or vape pen mods. But why are they called ‘pens’? Well, the first vape pens actually resembled cigarettes and were called cig-a-likes or e-cigarettes. However, eventually, manufacturers realized they needed to incorporate larger batteries and more power, so they started making larger devices that were more cylindrical and pen-shaped.

Vape pens are used for vaporizing e-liquid, wax, or dry herb and are powered by a small battery that connects to a tank or atomizer that contains a heating coil system. Then when the battery is fired or engaged, it will heat the coil, which in turn heats the e-liquid (wax or dry herb) and produces vapor.

Best Dry Herb Vape Pens

Dry herb vape pens are not as common as other types of pens. It’s only recently that we’ve seen substantial improvements in technology to produce small pens that are comfortable to hold in your hand, while also having enough power to constantly vaporize your bud. There have also been some options that are not really true weed vape pens. Here’s our list of recommendations for the best dry herb vape pens.

Firefly 2+

The Firefly 2+ has a slightly unconventional design compared to other dry herb vape pens, but its performance is hard to beat. It features a convection heating system that boosts the temperature as your draw to provide more consistent vaporization. The Firefly 2+ provides a fully-adjustable temperature between 360 & 500 °F (182 – 260°C). It reaches vaping temperature in just a few seconds, which is fantastic. It also has touch sensors for activation, a pad for concentration, and can charge from empty in 45 minutes. If you want the best vape pen for cannabis, the Firefly 2+ is an outstanding option.

It reaches vaping temperature in 90 seconds and delivers a great performance. The kit comes with the Arizer Air II vaporizer, a battery, charger, two glass tubes, silicone stem caps, and tons of extras.

Best THC Oil Vape Pens

A weed oil vape pen can generally be a better option than a dry herb pen due to its more pocketable size while maintaining excellent performance. However, there are not many options out there when it comes to specific THC oil vape pens. Still, there are a lot of affordable vape pens that work well with THC liquid concentrates, especially when paired with the right atomizers.

Vessel Wood Series

The Vessel comes in gorgeous designs and is not your average oil vape pen. It features a 240 mAh battery with three different power levels and is compatible with most 510 threaded oil cartridges. It can be charged via a magnetic USB cable or an optional docking station, which are available separately.

Best Wax/Dab Vape Pens

A wax pen (sometimes called a dab pen) is a type of vape pen designed to be used for solid, waxy concentrates. There are plenty of great options out there when it comes to wax pens, as you only need a good quality coil and small chamber to vaporize concentrates with ease. There are also dab ‘e-rigs’ which are much larger in size and require more components. If you are looking for the best wax vape pen, check out our recommendations below.

Yocan Evolve Plus XL V2

The Evolve Plus XL V2 from Yocan has quite a large wax pen design, but that’s to accommodate its large 1400mAh capacity battery. It’s simple to operate, has consistent power output, a chamber you open up and load, and a magnetically-attached mouthpiece. The Evolve Plus XL V2 wipes the floor with its competition when it comes to flavor and cloud performance, and that’s all thanks to its quad quartz coil. It also has adjustable airflow and a dual dual-compartment storage jar to help keep your concentrate nicely concealed.

Dabber Stella

Dr. Dabber Stella is the latest from a renowned brand in concentrate vaping. It features a “floating vapor chamber,” which improves efficiency by keeping heat production directed entirely towards concentrate. The Stella also has a vortex airflow system to help create a smoother and airier draw. It is powered by a 600mAh battery that offers three temperature settings, ranging from 460 to 775 °F (238 to 413 °C). The Stella is an excellent choice for a compact wax pen that still delivers on performance.

The G Pen Connect is slightly different from other wax pens on this list, but it’s the closest thing to a true dab pen. The 850mAh capacity battery section resembles a small box mod and offers three power settings 3.1, 3.6, and 4.1V. The real magic happens with the horizontally-oriented top part of the G Pen Connect, which consists of a ceramic heating element, a carb cap, and a glass section for connecting to any water pipe or bubbler. It also has a ‘reverse’ airflow system and a carb release button. The G Pen Connect delivers excellent performance when combined with a high-quality concentrate and glass piece.

Guide to Buying the Best Vape Pen

Vape Pens Keep Improving

The vape pen market is constantly changing. Not so long ago, the whole category was overrun with ‘eGo-style’ pens for e-juice, but now there are so many vaping options for all different types of material. Vape pens for nicotine range from user-friendly pod systems aimed at new vapers, to slim profile vape pens and large vape mods. However, it’s not just Nicotine vape pens that flood the market. There are tons of oil vape pens, dry herb vape pens, and even a plethora of pens for wax and dabbing.

If that’s not enough to confuse you, I’m sure things will only get more complicated in the future with advances in technology.

Below we try our best to give you all the essential information you need to know about vape pens, how they work, safety and maintenance, and how to find the best vape pen for your needs:

What is a Vape Pen?

The easiest way to define a vape pen (“vaporizer pen,” “vapor pen,” “e-pen,” “e-cig pen”) is that it’s a refillable device that vaporizes an inhalable material, and is typically the size of a standard writing pen. resembles a standard writing pen. However, nowadays, they aren’t the same size as a regular pen; most are typically the size of a marker pen or even larger. All vape pens are composed of two main parts; a battery section and a tank (or oven chamber). The tank or oven section is the part that’s filled with your desired vaping material, like e-juice, wax, oil, or marijuana flower.

How Do Vape Pens Work?

Vape pens work the same way as all other vapes on the market. They all contain an ‘atomizer,’ a fancy name for a coil of wire that contains ‘wick’ material inside and a battery. The battery sends power to the atomizer, which then vaporizes any vape juice or wax on the wick, turning it into an inhalable vapor. The atomizer sits in a tank and is one of the most essential parts of a vapor pen, allowing electricity to flow through it at the right amount to heat the e-juice or wax to produce vapor.

Most vape pens are operated manually by pressing and holding down a ‘fire’ button. But some newer devices also feature an ‘auto-draw’ function, in which as you inhale, a sensor is triggered to automatically start the device. In both cases, when the device is activated, it sends a current to the coil (atomizer), which then vaporizes the e-liquid. So the process is that the battery (power section) sends power to the tank (section containing the e-liquid), where there is a certain amount of juice to keep feeding the coil’s wick. The size of tanks will vary from device to device, with larger mod-like pens holding 4-5ml of juice and pod-style tanks typically smaller, around 2ml.

Where things get a little more complex is (like with many things in vaping), the definitions of devices are not exactly clear-cut, and the lines between vape pens, vape pods, and vape mods are a little blurred. Generally, a simple vape pen will operate at a fixed voltage. However, some pen vaporizers aimed at experienced vapers allow you to set and adjust the voltage. Typically, the larger devices enabled this, but with advances in battery tech, even newer smaller devices like ‘pod systems’ now have this ability. So, in summary, the definitions of what makes a vape pen are not too strict.

To open things up further, it’s not just e-juice that some vapor pens will vaporize. There are traditional vape pens with smaller tanks that are wax or oil vape pens. Then there are vape pens that operate slightly differently without a tank that are still classed as vape pens. For example, dry herb vaporizers have different heating methods. They have a chamber that operates at a constant temperature, compared to other vaporizers that periodically heat e-juice.

Types of Vape Pens

If you are looking for a top-rated vape pen, it’s important to understand the various different styles and types of vape pens on the market. So we have summarized a quick guide to help you determine which vape pen is right for you depending on what you want to vaporize:

E-Liquid Vape Pens

E-liquid vape pens work like standard vape pens as we explained above. They have an atomizer within a tank that vaporizes the e-juice. Typically the e-liquid will consist of Nicotine mixed with common solvents (PG/VG) and food flavorings. These style pens will vaporize the liquid when you press the fire button, which commences the current flow to the coil and starts the heating process.

Disposable Vape Pens

Disposable vapes are simplified versions of vape pens that have an integrated battery and tank that is already prefilled with vape juice. They are an excellent choice for beginners, as they require no refilling or battery/coil care. Once a disposable vape has depleted vape juice or battery then it needs to be disposed of, and you move on to the next one. Some do have rechargeable batteries, but generally, they have no other features and only work via auto-draw activation. Find out more about the best disposable vape pens here.

Dry Herb Vape Pens

Dry herb vape pens are actually quite different from a standard e-juice vape pen. Dry herb pens have a heat chamber that you fill up with your selected vaping herb. Once the herb pen is switched on, the chamber is kept at a consistent temperature and will remain hot for the ‘session,’ which typically varies between 2 to 5 minutes in length.

Dab Pens

Dab vape pens or concentrate vape pens work relatively similarly to e-liquid vape pens but are used to vaporize concentrates and waxes. They have coils that heat up in the same way when you press the fire button. However, they don’t have wicks like e-juice vape pens, as wicks are not required to soak up juice because of the more solid form of wax and concentrates. The coils usually surround a ceramic or quartz core, and the concentrate is then applied directly to the coil.

Multi-Function Vape Pens

Multi-function vape pens do precisely as the name suggests; they are a versatile vape pen that can perform a combination of the types above. They typically work with a replaceable cartridge system, and each cartridge could contain e-juice, waxes, oils, or dry herb. This usually leads to these styles of vape pens being more complex, as they have to be able to periodically heat the coil or maintain a constant temperature.

How to Choose the Best Vape Pen

So what are the key things to look for when you are trying to find the best vape or vaporizer pen?

The most essential thing is working out exactly what you require, as there is no one-size-fits-all best vape pen.

What Are You Wanting to Vape?

The primary thing to ask yourself is, what do I want to vape? Will you be using it for vaping e-juice, or do you require a dry herb or wax pen?

If you are unsure and possibly want to try vaping all 3, then a 3-in-1 vaporizer pen is your best choice. If not, it’s best to get something specialized for what you want to vape.

If you are wanting a dry herb vape pen, we’d suggest being a little more cautious and checking reviews and other people’s opinions on forums. Dry herb pens have to rapidly get the chamber into high temperatures, and some can easily fall short of doing this consistently. It’s usually the larger devices that achieve this best, like portable vaporizers. Unlike vaping concentrates or e-liquid, where even small devices can heat the coil quickly.

Battery Capacity

The next important factor to consider is battery life, and this is true for any type of e-cig pen you are considering.

Larger capacity batteries lead to better performance but at the cost of portability. So it’s worth finding the best middle-ground for your requirements.

Battery capacity on these devices is always shown in a figure of mAh (milliampere/hour). It’s quite easy to interpret; larger numbers mean more operating power and longer battery life. However, as mentioned before, that comes at a cost because large-capacity batteries are often more cumbersome.

A typical e-liquid vape pen like the Innokin Go Z comes with a 1500mAh battery. Compare this to a far smaller device like the KandyPens Rubi, which only has a 280mAh battery. So you could say the Endura will last 5 times longer. It’s not always that simple as it depends on other factors like the coil’s resistance. But the rule is more mAh, more battery life.

Variable Voltage, Variable Wattage & Variable Temperature

Some vaporizer pens can operate at a fixed temperature or voltage/wattage. However, it has become more common for newer devices to offer variable voltage, wattage, or temperature.

It is not an essential feature, but it certainly gives you far more control over your vape experience.

When it comes to e-liquid and wax, some of the best vape pens will allow you to select settings for a desired voltage or wattage. The Voopoo Doric 60 will enable you to set the power output between 5-60W, which means you can really tailor the vape. If you want more vapor and a hotter vape, crank up the watts.

However, the majority of dry herb vape pens are set to function at fixed temperatures. If you want precise temperature control, you’ll probably require a more substantial dry herb vaporizer.

What’s the Capacity of the Tank?

Similar to the battery capacity, an e-liquid pen or oil pen with a larger tank will require less refilling (which is beneficial) but may also be larger in size.

These days, most e-juice vape pens and pod systems vary in their juice capacity. Typically smaller devices like pods will hold 1-2ml, but it is becoming more common to see those that hold 3ml or more of juice.

Larger “sub-ohm” vape pens have tanks in line with their sub-ohm tank counterparts and can range anywhere from 3 to 8ml in capacity.

Dry herb pens don’t have a tank, but the chamber size will be equally important. If the chamber or oven doesn’t fit too much herb, it will need more frequent refilling and may not even satisfy a single session. For example, the G Pen Dash has a chamber that can hold about 0.2g of herb, while the PAX 3’s oven size is 0.3g. Generally, anything around this range is sufficient; however, if you want longer sessions, you can find dry herb vape pens with even larger chambers.

What Coils or Heating Element Does it Use?

There are an ever-increasing amount of coil options with vape pens, with anything from single, double, or even multi-coil builds inside. Even cheap vape pens are coming with more elaborate coils included.

The current most popular coils for nicotine vape pens are mesh coils. These are especially good as they increase the surface area in contact with the wick and, therefore, juice, so they tend to produce far better flavor and vapor. Other coils still perform well, but mesh coils are definitely the front-runner for performance.

If you are using a weed oil vape pen or wax pen, it’s more common to encounter dual or even quad coils wrapped around a quartz core. The benefit of this is that you can increase the coil’s surface area with minimal resistance by applying your material directly to the coils (for most devices). The performance should be good if the wax or weed oil vape pen has quartz or ceramic coils.

How Well Does it Perform?

Obviously, you will not know how well vape pens perform just by looking at their specifications and features. Unfortunately, some may have all the right specs on paper, but they may fall short when it comes to using them. That’s why it’s always best to get information on their real-world use. This is easier said than done, as you can’t just go into every vape store and try every vape pen. That’s why it’s always best to check out reviews of any vape pen you are interested in. Most reviewers will test a product for a while and give honest feedback on how well the vape pen performs and any underlying issues. So it’s good to check out as many vape pen reviews as possible. It can also benefit to check out forums like Reddit to see what others are saying about the device.

The Best Vape Pen – What to look out for?

If you consider all the factors mentioned above, you will have much more success finding the top vape pens for your needs.

Unfortunately, there is some trial and error when finding the perfect device for your needs, but hopefully, the points above should help narrow your focus.

The Overall Cost of Vape Pens

There are tons of cheap vape pens on the market. However, as with most things, you almost always get what you pay for with e-pens. Some affordable vape pens are great, but you have a much greater chance of being disappointed when shopping in the bargain bucket. Just because it’s an affordable vape pen doesn’t mean it’s the best option.

When it comes to nicotine e-juice pens, the best quality options range from $20-$40 (as shown in our list above). Some may have a few more features and therefore come in a little more expensive. However, if you shop in this price range and only seek popular brands and reputable companies, you’ll have a much better chance of finding a quality device without overpaying. For example, Uwell is an extremely trusted brand for vape pens, and you can typically find the Uwell Whirl S for around $40.

Dry herb and wax vaporizer pens tend to be a little more costly. It’s common to see some of the best dab vape pens in the $80 range. Things get a little more expensive when you venture into the dry herb vape pen market. This is due to the technology required to heat dry herb compared to e-juice or concentrates. As previously mentioned, they require an oven chamber that needs to maintain a constant temperature.

Common Problems With Vape Pens

As with any technology, just because you’ve found the perfect device, it doesn’t mean you won’t run into some issues along the way. Most cases will probably be minor and easy to deal with, so we will try and cover the main issues here for you.

Some of these issues are typically more common with e-juice and wax vape pens, but there are still a few to watch out for with dry herb pens.

Connection & Power Issues with all types of Vape Pen

Vape pens all require power, and a good battery connection with a coil or atomizer, and despite which style you are using you may run into issues.

If you are having issues with your device not working due to the power, don’t worry; they are relatively easy to solve. The first thing is to make sure your device is fully charged. I know it sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many times that’s the sole issue.

Secondly, and perhaps just as obvious, is to make sure the device is switched on. Most vape pens have a powered-off or locked state, and this is typically pressing the fire button five times in quickly (refer to the manual of your device). Don’t worry, even experienced vapors sometimes accidentally switch off and lock their device.

If you’ve tried the above, but still the device doesn’t respond or is not producing any vapor when you activate it, then it may be a connection problem. On most e-liquid vape pens where the tank or atomizer connects to the battery, they have a contact pin. Sometimes this pin can get clogged up or even stuck down. Make sure the connection is clean, and if it looks like it is recessed too far, try and free it up with a small screwdriver.

It’s a bit of a delicate process, so try at your own risk and make sure you take care while doing it. There should be some space around the edge of the contact pin. Put the tip of your screwdriver in there and slowly and gently wiggle it to raise the contact point. Try and do this all the way around, and always be careful not to force it too much. Then try and connect your atomizer again, and see if you have a connection.

A common way the connection point gets clogged up is due to excess e-juice. So it’s always best practice to regularly clean the connection points with a paper towel. You can also use a Q-tip in the contact pin if you notice it is especially gunky.

If you’ve tried all of the above and still can’t get your vape pen to work, then, unfortunately, it could just be a case of something being broken. If it’s a reasonably new device, you may still be under warranty. Always check with the store where you purchased the vape pen to see if they can assist.

E-Liquid Vape Pens: Leaking Issues

The most common problem you will run into with an e-liquid vape pen is leaking. There are several reasons this can happen, but thankfully they are simple to solve.

Nearly all e-juice vape pens will have a tank section that screws onto the device. The vape tank will generally have a bottom section that contains the coil/atomizer, and if this is not screwed tight enough, then juice can leak out through the gaps. So always make sure things are adequately tightened to prevent any leaking issues.

Conversely, try to avoid over-tightening. Most of the tank sections will have ‘O-rings’ that help form a tight seal. If you over-tighten some of the tank sections, you could accidentally damage the O-rings, which will break the seal and allow the juice to flow out of the tank. It’s hard to quantify what’s tight enough and what is too tight – but we would advise only tightening things by hand, never using another tool.

If you are concerned that you have damaged O-rings, you can disassemble the tank to inspect it. Most tanks will come with spare O-rings so any that are damaged can be replaced, and all decent manufacturers will have a manual showing how to disassemble the tank sections. Here is a guide on how to clean your vape tanks.

Another cause of a leaking vapor pen is too much juice finding its way to the atomizer head or coil and over-flooding it. You will generally notice gurgling sounds from the tank when this is the issue. Over-flooding is sometimes caused by the viscosity of your juice. Some juices with a higher percentage of PG to VG will have a thinner consistency and can find their way through the coil’s wick and into the airflow sections of the tank. You can find out more about PG/VG juice ratios and Nicotine here.

To avoid flooding, always ensure you do not overfill your tank. Also, try not to draw or inhale on your vape pen when you are not firing it. Every time you inhale on your vape pen, you pull the e-liquid into the coil and wick. If you constantly do this without vaporizing the excess juice, it will flood. Also, be aware of how hard you suck when inhaling; try and keep it gentle and slow. You will not get more vapor by inhaling forcefully, and this may cause over-flooding.

For a complete guide on fixing leaking or spitting tanks check out our guide here. There are also some excellently designed tanks on the market that are leak-resistant. See our complete list of the best leakproof tanks.

Wax Pens: Heating Element/Chamber Issues

If your wax vape pen is giving you issues, and it doesn’t seem to be a straightforward atomizer connection issue, then you are going to need to inspect the heating element. A common problem with wax vape pens is the heating element or coil does not make proper contact where it needs to. Thankfully, in most cases, this can be fixed with a simple toothpick or paperclip, and some gentle adjustment.

You will have to take great care while doing this because if you damage the coil, it will be irreparable. So be gentle and take your time.

Here is a quick run-through of what you need to do. Firstly inspect the heating chamber. You will notice the way the coil sits, typically it starts to spiral towards the chamber’s center. On the outside, there are normally two pins where the coil ends connect. The most likely problem is that the coil isn’t making a connection with these two pins. So you just need to very gently nudge them down to make contact, you can do this with your toothpick or paperclip. You just need to get the tips to make contact with the pins again. Just be careful not to distort or damage the coil in any way.

If the above doesn’t work, you could try inserting the paper clip or toothpick into the center of the coil and wiggling it slightly. This may help make contact but be warned that it’s more of a last resort and could easily damage the coil.

Safety Tips for all Vape Pens

Fortunately, any good vape pen will typically have built-in safety features, and there is very little potential for things to go wrong. However, here are a few safety recommendations and pointers to avoid any problems.

  • Switch off your device when not in use: Vape pens are equipped with a lock or power switch for a reason. It’s always best practice to switch them off when not in use. This is especially true when you are carrying them around in your pocket, as they could accidentally fire ruining your coil and put undue stress on your battery – which could lead to more severe issues. Remove this danger by switching it off or locking it, usually with five quick presses of the fire button.
  • Always use the included charger: Charging incorrectly can always be a risk with technology; you only need to look at incidents with mobile phones to see this can happen anywhere. Despite the manufacturer’s best efforts to prevent charging issues with vapor pens, if you use the wrong power-rated cable to charge your device, it could cause issues. So it’s best to always use the included charger.
  • Don’t overcharge: As above, manufacturers include safety protection for overcharging of vaporizer pens. However, it’s always the safest and best practice to remove the device from charging once complete. Many vape pens will have an LED status light on the device or charger showing when it is fully charged.
  • Never leave it charging overnight: Sticking with charging procedures and taking into account the above. It is always best to charge your devices when you are present, and never a good idea to leave them charging overnight. If there is an issue, you won’t know until it’s too late.
  • Always keep your device clean: As you’ve seen from our section on fixing issues with leaking on pen-style vapes, it’s easy for vape juice to get onto the contacts of the device. It’s always best if you have any leaks or spills to make sure your device and all connections are thoroughly cleaned.
  • Clean up other e-liquid spills: Nicotine can be absorbed through the skin, so make sure you clean up any other accidental spills and leaks of vape juice from your vapor pen. This can be done with warm soapy water or rubbing alcohol.

It’s important to stress that vape devices are not dangerous, and all of the best vape pens have built-in safety protections. The above steps ensure that you are doing everything you can to take good care of your device and prevent any unfortunate incidents from occurring.
